When to Use PNG

PNG uses lossless compression, meaning no image data is discarded during saving. Every pixel stays exactly as it was. This makes PNG the right choice in several scenarios.

Screenshots and UI elements. Text, icons, and interface elements contain sharp edges and flat colors. JPG compression creates visible artifacts around these details, while PNG keeps them crisp.

Graphics and illustrations. Vector-style artwork, charts, diagrams, and anything with large areas of solid color compresses efficiently as PNG. The file sizes stay reasonable because the lossless algorithm excels with uniform regions.

When quality cannot be compromised. If you're working on a design project and need to preserve every detail through multiple rounds of editing, PNG prevents the quality loss that comes with repeatedly saving as JPG.

The downside: PNG files are significantly larger than JPG or WebP for photographic content. A high-resolution photo saved as PNG might be 10-20 MB, while the same image as JPG could be 1-3 MB.

When to Use JPG

JPG (also written as JPEG) uses lossy compression. It discards image data that the human eye is less likely to notice, resulting in much smaller files.

Photographs. JPG was designed for photographic content. The lossy compression works remarkably well with the natural gradients, textures, and color variations found in photos. At quality settings above 85, most people cannot tell the difference between a JPG and the uncompressed original.

Email attachments. When sending images by email, JPG offers the best balance of quality and file size. Recipients can open JPG files on any device without issues.

Social media. Every platform accepts JPG. Even if they convert your image internally, starting with a high-quality JPG gives the best results.

Print submissions. While professional print workflows often prefer TIFF or PDF, JPG at maximum quality is widely accepted by consumer printing services.

The tradeoff: every time you open, edit, and re-save a JPG, a little more quality is lost. For files you'll edit repeatedly, work in PNG or your editor's native format and export to JPG only at the end.

When to Use WebP

WebP combines the best of both worlds. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation, all with smaller file sizes than PNG or JPG.

Website images. WebP files are 25-35% smaller than equivalent JPGs, which means faster page loads and lower bandwidth costs. If web performance matters to you, WebP is the clear winner.

Web applications. Any image displayed in a modern browser benefits from WebP's superior compression. User avatars, product photos, banners, and thumbnails all load faster.

When you need both transparency and small files. A PNG with transparency might be 500 KB. The same image as WebP could be 150 KB. For websites with many transparent graphics, the savings add up fast.

The limitation: software support outside of browsers is still catching up. Older image viewers, email clients, and design tools may not open WebP files. For maximum compatibility, convert to JPG or PNG when sharing files outside the web.
