Why Are PNG Files So Large?

Modern quantization algorithms are remarkably good at choosing colors that minimize visible differences. For most graphics, logos, and screenshots, a quantized PNG at 256 colors is virtually indistinguishable from the original. For images with smooth gradients, you may notice slight banding if you look closely.

The key advantage: transparency is fully preserved during quantization. The alpha channel is maintained, so your transparent PNGs stay transparent.

Expected results with lossy compression:

  • Screenshots: 50-70% smaller
  • Logos and icons: 60-80% smaller
  • Graphics with transparency: 50-75% smaller
